Armando Romero

XX Century Parade

May 7 – June 19, 2009

Leslie Feely Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings and sculpture by Mexican artist Armando Romero. XX Century Parade is Romero’s debut show in New York City, and it inaugurates a three-part simultaneous exhibition of his work in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas.

Fusing photo-realism and pop collage, chiaroscuro and graffiti, Armando Romero has proven himself a master of Post-Modern storytelling. In his most recent series, Romero assembles a parade of characters from the twentieth-century and reimagines them in uncanny juxtapositions across time, space, and culture. The result is a humorous and at times unsettling panorama of the past century, where cartoon characters and masked avengers command the same attention as important historical figures, and respectable family portraits fall prey to extraterrestrial invasion. Romero’s bold use of color and fine-tuned false aging hold these elaborate compositions together and enhance the dreamlike quality of each scene.

Armando Romero was born in Mexico City in 1964. He studied and later taught at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking, also known as “La Esmeralda.” The artist lives and works in Mexico City.

A fully illustrated color catalogue accompanies this exhibition, with texts by Charissa N. Terranova, PhD, Professor of Art at the University of Texas, and José M. Tasende. XX Century Parade will also be exhibited at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary (The MAC) in Dallas, TX and the Tasende Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.
